Business Students Celebrate Cultural Diversity on the Society of Hotel and Tourism Management (SoHo) International Day
More than 400 participants, including international and local students groups and faculty members, took part in the SoHo International Day on January 18, 2019. The International Day, co-organised by the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) and the Society of Hotel and Tourism Management (SoHo), was a student-initiated event aiming to promote cultural diversity amongst business students. Prof. David Chan, the Director of SHTM and Mr. Wilson Lee, the General Manager of Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Shatin also attended the event to show their support.
During the half-day event, seven student booths and the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Shatin booth together provided more than 30 traditional cuisines and beverages from around the world, varying between French, Kazakhstan, Korean, Mexican, Singaporean, Taiwanese and local Hong Kong cuisines.
“We brought most of the food ingredients from our home country to prepare for this event in order to ensure an authentic experience for visitors with traditional Kazakhstan cuisine,” said Anna Ni (Hospitality and Real Estate, Year 3, International student from Kazakhstan). “I am also really happy that this event took place in CUHK because we have the opportunity to share our country’s culture with others and can be part of the School’s diverse community.”
The event also served as a platform for students and faculty members to mingle with each other outside the classroom setting, in order to cultivate a stronger bond. Cecilia Lau (Hospitality and Real Estate, Year 2), the team leader of the organising committee, said that this is the first time Soho organising the International Day.
“This is the first time for SoHo to organise a large-scale event to promote cultural diversity. During the past four months, our team worked tirelessly on the event preparation. It was quite challenging as we didn’t have any experience or any similar event to refer to, so we had to start from scratch and work out the logistics along the way. However, it was worth all the effort when we witnessed how everyone was enjoying themselves during the event.”
