Journey of Social Innovation: CUHK Business School Students Embark on a Transformative Study Trip from Hong Kong to South Korea

CUHK Business School students explored the main campus of Hanyang University located in Seoul.

A group of 20 students from various business programmes recently joined forces and took part in a 5-day study trip to South Korea from 18 – 22 Dec 2023. The study tour expanded the students’ new horizons in social innovation and offered them cross-cultural insights through the interactive activities in collaboration with Hanyang University.
The study tour led by Dr. Fred Ku, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies), was revamped into 2 parts this year. It began with a series of pre-tour workshops aimed at instilling students with basic ideas of social innovation locally, followed by a physical trip to one of the leading cities in Asia for social innovation and social entrepreneurship – South Korea.
The journey kicked off by a lecture delivered by Prof. Hyunsang Shin and Prof. Christian Joon Park from Hanyang University. Our students were introduced to the development of social innovation in South Korea, which paved the way for the upcoming visits to explore the real practices adopted by social enterprises and non-profit organizations.

Under the guidance of the SSIR Korea Next Impact Team, students formed into different teams and embarked on a journey to Seongsu-dong, often referred to as the “Brooklyn of Seoul”. Through engaging conversations with local firms, students gained valuable first-hand insights into the integration of social innovation within businesses and also prompted them to reflect on their potential roles as future leaders to drive forward social innovation in Hong Kong.

In addition to the local visits and lectures, the trip also included a visit to Hyundai Motorstudio Seoul, where students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Hyundai brand through automotive culture and art. This unique experience allowed them to explore the intersection of innovation, design, and technology within the automotive industry while gaining a deeper understanding of Hyundai’s brand philosophy and its impact on society.

The representatives from Hyundai Motorstudio Seoul explained the meticulous safety design in their cars.

The trip concluded with a farewell dinner at Hanyang University, becoming a standout learning experience during the winter break and a cherished memory for all participants.

A heartfelt group photo commemorated the special moments and connections made during the study tour.
