A team of four high calibre undergraduate students from CUHK Business School recently seized the 2nd runner-up at the Chicago Quantitative Alliance (CQA) 11th Investment Challenge by showcasing their exceptional investment skills in managing a fully invested and dollar-neutral diversified portfolio over five months. The challenge this year attracted 31 teams from 18 schools across the globe, creating an intense and competitive event for all participants.
The CQA Investment Challenge is an annual equity portfolio management competition organised by the Chicago Quantitative Alliance. Serving as a well-known challenge among all business schools worldwide, the competition provides participants with a hands-on opportunity to learn and apply stock selection and portfolio management skills in a simulated, real-life hedge fund experience.
Our winning CUHK team, comprising Florence Chan (QFIN, Year 2), Jackson Chan (QFIN, Year 2), Jonathan Cheng (GLEF, Year 2), and Sunny Cheung (QFIN, Year 2), reflected on their challenging journey. They recognised that not only hard skills were required for this competition, but also teamwork and a persistent, never-give-up attitude were equally crucial to their success.
“Despite lagging behind due to a compliance error, which put us at a significant disadvantage in the final round, we persisted in giving our very best until the end, and the results validated our efforts along the way,” Sunny mentioned.
A special thanks goes to the team mentor, Mr. Patrick Lee (IBBA 1993), who is also our alumnus, for his continuous support to CUHK Business School in participating in this challenge over the years.
Sharing from the team

“We would like to express our gratitude to the individuals who played a crucial role in our success during the CQA 11th Annual Investment Challenge. First, a big thank you to our mentor, Patrick, for his feedback and consistent updates throughout the competition. We are also grateful to our peers who shared their insights and suggestions based on their own previous competition experiences. Lastly, we want to thank our teammates for their dedication and collaborative spirit. Without the hard work from all of us, our achievements would not have been possible.”
